چکیده

We develop a scaling relationship between the exciton binding energy and the external dielectric function in carbon nanotubes. We show that the electron–electron and electron–hole interaction energies are strongly affected by screening yet largely counteract each other, resulting in much smaller changes in the optical transition energy. The model indicates that the relevant particle interaction energies are reduced by as much as 50% upon screening by water and that the unscreened electron–electron interaction energy is larger than the unscreened electron–hole interaction energy, in agreement with explanations of the ‘‘ratio problem.’’ We apply the model to measurements of the changes in the optical transition energies in single, suspended carbon nanotubes as the external dielectric environment is altered. r 2007 Elsevier B.V. Screening of excitons in single, suspended carbon nanotubes.

Resonant Raman spectroscopy of single carbon nanotubes suspended across trenches displays red-shifts of up to 30 meV of the electronic transition energies as a function of the surrounding dielectric environment. We develop a simple scaling relationship between the exciton binding energy and the external dielectric function and thus quantify the effect of screening. Our results imply that the un...

Bright and dark exciton energy and excitonic effect of single wall carbon nanotubes

This Abstract has been read for 18 times Abstract id: 422 Sorting Category: XII. Optical and optoelectronic properties We calculate optically-active (bright) and optically-inactive (dark) exciton energy of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The bright and dark exciton energy of SWNTs is calculated by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation in which the one particle energies are given by the exte...

Exciton energy Kataura plot and excitonic effect of single wall carbon nanotubes

We calculate exciton energy of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The exciton energy depends on the surrounding materials of the SWNT [1]. This environmental effect is expressed by the dielectric constant [2]. In previous paper we used the static dielectric constant in order to reproduce the resonance Raman experiment for bundle samples [3,4]. However, since the dielectric constant depends o...

Photoinduced spontaneous free-carrier generation in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes.

Strong quantum confinement and low dielectric screening impart single-walled carbon nanotubes with exciton-binding energies substantially exceeding kBT at room temperature. Despite these large binding energies, reported photoluminescence quantum yields are typically low and some studies suggest that photoexcitation of carbon nanotube excitonic transitions can produce free charge carriers. Here ...

Exciton transition energy in photoluminescence of single-walled carbon nanotubes

Photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectroscopy of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) has been extensively studied for characterization of their unique electronic properties due to the one-dimensionality. The precise evaluation of exciton transition energy is essential for experimental assignments of optical absorption, photoluminescence, and resonant Raman scatterings. Here, several experi...
